Beacon Programme (September 2009) |
|
|
Crystal Palace will be part of a network of Beacon Programmes which the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is currently launching at centres with 50-metre pools in various parts of England.
International swimming coach Ron Philpot has been appointed as the first Head of Aquatics for the new Crystal Palace Beacon Programme. He expects to begin work in June and the programme is expected to be fully operational by September 2009.
Philpot hopes the programme will halt the drift of senior aquatic athletes in the region to other parts of Britain and abroad. "Quite a few swimmers have come from London and the South East but we have not had the facilities or programme to keep them here once they get to a certain age," he said. "Hopefully we can change that, although we will have to be patient with it – I don’t think it’s going to happen overnight."
Philpot said selected swimmers would still compete for their clubs but would also now have access to about 20 training hours a week in the 50m pool and to dry land facilities and support services such as sports science and physiotherapy.
As a result of the programme all clubs in the London Region will no longer have pool allocations for training in Crystal Palace. |

Commencing on 1st October 2005 ASA Racing Technical Rules will incorporate FINA Rules. This change has been introduced in order to provide athletes competing throughout Great Britain and beyond with a common set of rules under which they compete. The following guidelines are provided to assist all participants in the sport in applying the rules in a manner that is safe, consistent and fair to all athletes at all levels of ability. |

London Swimming runs Championships at regional level and relies on counties (Middlesex, Essex, Surrey and Kent) and clubs to provide the next layers of competition. Those competing at the London Championships can post times to qualify for National events.
London also has a coaching forum which pulls together the lead coaches in Swim 21 Clubs who are producing swimmers at national level to make sure the opportunties offered are 'coach led and athlete centred'. |

Why use PDF?
If you want to transfer files by email or the Web to other computer users and to ensure that your files are readable, the safest option is to convert them to PDF. Other computer users will not always have the appropriate software to view your text and graphics files but the software to read PDF files is free and widely installed. PDF is frequently used as a 'print-friendly' format which can be made widely available from the Web.
PDF files will appear exactly the same whatever computer you use, so a PDF file made from a document which was originally formatted in Word will look exactly the same on someone else's machine as it did on yours. This is true even if graphics were embedded in the original file.
PDF is:
- Widely used
- A compressed format
- Viewable on any computer - formatted as it left the author
- Able to include any text, tables or graphics as a single file
- Printable |

Beckenham SC Web Site Usage Statistics:
Since its launch in June 2008 the number of hits per month on the Beckenham SC website has increased significantly as shown in the chart below:

Unique Visitors - How many people came to the Beckenham Swimming Club website. This report graphs people instead of visits. A unique visitor is a statistic describing a unit of traffic to a Web site, counting each visitor only once in the time frame of the report. This statistic is relevant to site publishers and advertisers as a measure of a site's true audience size, equivalent to the term "Reach" used in other media.
Visits - The number of visits received by the Beckenham Swimming Club web site. A 'visit or session' is a series of requests from the same uniquely identified client with a set timeout. A visit is expected to contain multiple hits (in log analysis) and page views.
Pages - Page Views is the total number of pages viewed on the Beckenham Swimming Club web site and is a general measure of how much the web site is used.
Hit - A request for a file from the web server. Available only in log analysis. The number of hits received by a website is frequently cited to assert its popularity, but this number is extremely misleading and dramatically over-estimates popularity. A single web-page typically consists of multiple (often dozens) of discrete files, each of which is counted as a hit as the page is downloaded, so the number of hits is really an arbitrary number more reflective of the complexity of individual pages on the website than the website's actual popularity. The total number of visitors or page views provides a more realistic and accurate assessment of popularity.
